What taxes are included on my bill?

On your NextVolt Energy electricity bill, taxes can be broken out into a few categories:

  • Sales Tax: The Texas state sales tax is typically 6.25% and is levied on the sale of tangible personal property and selected services. This tax applies to your electricity consumption. If you reside within a city that imposes a sales tax, a municipal sales sax  will be added to your bill. The rate can vary from city to city, but typically it's up to 2% for a total combined state and local rate of no more than 8.25%. You will see your state and municipal sales tax will be line-items as “Sales Tax” under the Taxes section of your charges.

  • Gross Receipts Reimbursement (GRR): This isn't technically a tax, but it often appears as such on the bill. Texas REPs are subject to a Gross Receipts Tax, and they're allowed to pass this cost onto their customers. This reimbursement is typically a small percentage of the bill.

  • PUC Assessment: The Public Utility Commission (PUC) of Texas imposes a fee on all electricity sales, and this fee is used to fund the operations of the PUC. It's a small percentage, typically well under 1% of the bill.
